This handmade jar is made from the famous red clay that defines Mumyoi ware. The kiln effects of this jar is known as "yohen" and the intricate design and deep colors are from oxidation and reduction of the clay from the intense heat of the kiln.

About the craftsman: Itō Sekisui is a a distinguished Japanese ceramic artist renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to preserving traditional pottery techniques. As the fifth-generation successor of the Itō family, he continues the legacy of Mumyoi ware, a distinctive style of pottery originating from Sado Island, Niigata Prefecture. His passion for ceramics led him to study under the guidance of his grandfather, honing his skills and deepening his understanding of traditional pottery methods and combining it with his comtemporary sensibilities.

Elevating traditional red clay pottery techniques to new heights while preserving tradition, Ito Sekisui assumed the title of the fifth-generation in 1977. Through great efforts and innovation, Mumyoi ware gained high recognition not only in Japan but internationally as well. In 2003, Ito Sekisui V was designated as a Living National treasure due to his excellence in inheriting, communicating, and maintaining Mumyoi's traditional techniques combined with unique aesthetics to the wider world. Many of his works have been recognized with awards such as the Purple Ribbon Medal (2005) and Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette (2011).
